WHAT IS SCHEMA THERAPY?

Schema Therapy is a client-centred, integrative psychological approach that provides a deeper way of working. Schema therapy works with the developmental origins of mental health difficulties and creates a healing space to resolve early experiences that underlie distress. It is most commonly used to address chronic and longstanding mental health conditions, such as persistent mood disorders and personality disorders, however, is also beneficial for those who find themselves feeling stuck in repeating and self-defeating life patterns.

HOW DOES SCHEMA THERAPY WORK?

Schema therapy is founded on the idea that persistent emotional conditions develop when our core emotional needs are not met during childhood. These core needs include:

  • Safety & nurturance (including safe attachment)

  • Autonomy, competence, & sense of identity

  • Freedom to express needs, opinions, & emotions

  • Spontaneity & play

  • Realistic limits & self-control

When our emotional needs are not met in childhood, we have an increased risk of forming negative beliefs about ourselves (e.g. I’m not good enough, I’m unloveable) and others (e.g., people abandon or reject me). These beliefs (or schemas) can lead to a range of mental health issues, along with low self-esteem, lack of connection, problems expressing emotions, excessive worrying about safety issues, and feelings of unlovability, shame & unworthiness.

HOW CAN SCHEMA THERAPY HELP ME?

Schema therapy is a collaborative, relational approach that involves developing a safe and trusting relationship with your psychologist. In this relationship, your psychologist or counsellor will walk alongside you to support greater insight, understanding and healing of self-defeating patterns. Throughout treatment, you will:

  • Identify self-defeating schemas and become aware of how they operate in your day-to-day life;

  • Heal schemas by reducing the intensity of emotional memories and bodily sensations associated with them;

  • Learn how to recognise and bypass defences (or coping styles) that get in the way of having our core needs met.

If you would like to book in for schema therapy with one of our Noosa psychologists, or to find out more about our approach to psychology and counselling, please reach out to us.
