WHAT IS COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY?

How we think perceive events determines, to a significant degree, what we feel. Our mind can help us to feel confident, hopeful, motivated and realistic, or it can lead us down a path of negative thinking patterns, self-criticism & self-blame. In Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT, negative thinking styles and actions (or inactions) are identified, challenged and replaced with new, healthy ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.

CBT emphasises what is going on in your current life, rather than what has led up to your difficulties. As a part of your psychology appointments, a certain amount of information about your history is gathered, but the focus is primarily on moving forward in time to develop more effective ways of coping with life.

CBT is a widely utilised, evidence-based psychology intervention found to be effective for the treatment of:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Obsessive compulsive disorder

  • Eating disorders

  • Phobias

  • Insomnia
