WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety is a common mental health condition characterised by feelings of fear, excessive worry, avoidance, and physiological arousal symptoms. On average, one in four people will experience anxiety at some stage in their life.

As a part of the human condition, we all experience periods of anxiety and stress when faced with a challenging experiences (such as a presentation or period of busyness with work/life/parenthood). For many, these experiences tend to be time-limited and controllable. For others, or during more challenging periods of life, these symptoms become intrusive and distressing, and can begin to interfere with daily life. This degree of anxiety can negatively impact our sleep, reduce our quality of life, and interfere with our day-to-day functioning.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF ANXIETY?

While each anxiety condition has its own distinct characteristics, there are some common symptoms, including:

  • Physical: panic attacks, racing heart, tightness of the chest, hot and cold flushes, shallow breathing, restlessness, or feeling tense, wound up and edgy.

  • Psychological: excessive fear, worry, and catastrophic or obsessive thinking.

  • Behavioural: avoidance of situations that make you feel anxious.

Anxiety can have a significant impact on your life, relationships and overall confidence. Evidence-based psychology treatment can help you to understand the origins of your anxiety, develop ways to cope, and re-engage in a meaningful life.

WHAT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FOR ANXIETY?

There are many effective treatments for anxiety and the sooner you get support, the more likely you are to recover. CBT is considered the gold standard in the psychological treatment of anxiety disorders. If you are living with more chronic symptoms of anxiety, Schema Therapy and other talking therapies may also be beneficial.

Given the variety of factors that can underlie anxiety, treatment must be tailored to your individual needs. Therapy may incorporate skills-building, relaxation training, exposure, self-compassion exercises, working with critical parts of self, exploring and healing maladaptive schemas/beliefs, and/or working through prior trauma using EMDR therapy.
