WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

Depression is a common and serious condition that affects our mood, motivation, appetite, energy, and sleep. While we all experience periods of sadness and low motivation from time-to-time, some people experience these symptoms intensely and over extended periods of time (weeks, months or even years).

It is common for depression to co-exist with other mental health issues, such as anxiety, grief and post-traumatic stress. These co-morbidities can worsen symptoms of depression and lead to greater distress.

Research suggests that a wide range of factors can contribute to depression, including, genetic factors, chronic stress, social isolation, trauma & abuse, interpersonal problems, substance misuse, illness and grief.
