PERSONALITY DISORDERS TREATMENT

Living with a personality can be highly distressing, confusing & isolating. Supportive & evidence-based treatment is available.

WHAT IS A PERSONALITY DISORDER?

There are several definitions of a personality disorder, with most agreeing that personality disorders affect the way people think and feel about themselves and others. Individuals living with a personality disorder tend to have ideas and feelings that negatively affect the way they relate to others, while also resulting in considerable negative feelings and ideas towards themselves.

While many of us experience these feelings from time to time, the features that define a personality disorder are the intensity and frequency of these negative internal events. These feelings can be overwhelming to individuals with a personality disorder and can sometimes lead to engagement in self-harm, substance misuse, binge-eating and/or other risky and damaging activities, in an attempt to detach from the distress of this experience.

Living with a personality disorder can be isolating, lonely and highly distressing. Fortunately, there are a number of psychological treatments that have been found to be effective in reducing symptoms & distress, including Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). Getting the right help can significantly increase a person’s quality of life.

There are six types of personality disorder, each with its own particular characteristics. If you would like to find out more information or access treatment for a personality disorders, please contact us or visit https://www.spectrumbpd.com.au/ .
